The aim of the SUMER (Solar Ultraviolet Measurements of Emitted Radiation) instrument is to obtain spectra for determination of temperatures, densities, and velocities in solar atmospheric features. This is to investigate small-scale reconnection events and so to help to understand how the Sun heats its corona.
